Captain Fowles and Hastings star in a nail-biting thriller at Histon Rec…
Camden Under 14s (108 for 2, Fowles 45 not out) beat Histon Under 14s (106 for 9, Hastings 3-19, Fowles 2-25) by 2 runs.
On a very damp and overcast Thursday evening at Histon Recreation ground, Camden Under 14s finally got their 2011 season
underway and were promptly inserted by the Histon Captain Rahib Yousaf.
Whilst most of Cambridge was dealing with an inconsistent power shower from the heavens, Histon Recreation ground was
spared from the rain. Yet little did the locals know that they were in for such a thrilling game of T20 cricket that
made even the IPL look boring…
On a damp, flat deck, Camden skipper Luke Fowles opened the batting with rising star Alex Malik-Jones. Although runs were
difficult to come by initially (only about 30 off the first 8 overs) due to some tidy bowling from the Histon bowlers,
Fowles eventually broke the shackles with 3 consecutive pull shots that even Sir Viv would’ve been proud of. Malik-Jones
continued to ably support his captain as the opening pair put on 40, before Alex lost his leg stump to Histon’s wily offspinner.
Anthony Kattuman joined Luke and injected some much needed pace into the innings as Camden started to exploit some untidy
Histon fielding. Once Kattuman had departed for a whirlwind 18 runs, a late cameo from Alex Wilson provided more support
for Fowles as the Captain anchored the Camden innings, finished unbeaten but just short of what would’ve been a deserved 50.
Histon’s reply began poorly as Alex Wilson sent back Harry Wilde in the second over. Captain Fowles then dismissed the
other Histon opener, bringing his District team mate Rahib to the crease as he and Thomas Hopper steadily began to
rebuild and meet the asking rate for the first 10 overs, preying on some short and wide bowling. The game was however
to take a turn with the introduction of Sam Walsh and Ollie Hastings, the former accounting for both Rahib (caught)
whilst the latter took wickets with the first ball of both his first 2 overs, both bowled. When Fowles returned to
remove Heeks (bowled again) and Malik-Jones bowled Weeks, Histon had slumped to 85 for 8 with 2 overs remaining. However
number batsman Josh Fulcher began to unleash a series of big shots to set up a grandstand finish. Alex Wilson was guilty
of some overexcited fielding, and after 8 overthrows were conceded in 3 balls, 7 runs were required from the final to
balls. However it was Wilson who had the final say as he held his nerve to eventually only concede a single of the last
ball and hand Camden a nail biting 2 run victory as the orange-pink sun set
Great advert for Colts cricket.
